Today we visited a really cool place - the German Tech Museum. It is incredibly well done. So many beautiful examples of technological masterpieces and well-presented storyline of the machinery development.
After our wonderful tour, we started to discuss one interesting topic. At some point when Marten was explaining to me what is the working principle of an airplane engine, I noticed, that I was the only woman in that room. Later I saw one girl with 100% focus exploring the airplane from the 1940s. It made me really happy. But she was the only one. So I started thinking, that today we talk so much about gender equity and more girls in tech. And I can see many families coming to the museum, but in reality, to the rooms with more details and more complex topics, dads tend to take their sons. That is just an observation from today. Is it really so? Good question.
As a kid, I was a regular visitor to museums. I knew some of them by heart. But all museums where art museums - Russian museum and Hermitage in St.Peterburg, Louvre and Orsay in Paris...
My mom and my dad are both engineers. At some point, my mother decided to quit the world of technology and started working in education. My dad is a mechanical engineer working with complex systems all his life. But instead of taking me to his job when I was little, he took me to dance classes and painted with me.
At a later age, I remember he let me help with terrace construction. He was so proud of me. I was the girl, who “worked” in construction. I felt really good. It was the only moment I remember when I was strongly encouraged by parents to meet the world of construction and technology.
All my hobbies and free time activities were painting, dancing, playing the flute and learning foreign languages. Like in old romantic times. It shaped me as a sensitive person and helped me to develop a strong awareness of culture and understanding of people. I am very thankful to my parents that they invested so much time and love into my cultural education. But I never did anything in my free time what would help me to choose my profession. Maybe when I was young there simply weren't such opportunities as we have today - robotics and science kids clubs, wonderful tech museums and exploration centers.
Today I am a civil engineer. How I ended up choosing it as my profession? That is a very good question.
Nevertheless, here are some fun pictures of our 4-hour visit. We managed to go only trough 1/2 of this gigantic museum of tech wonders. Highly recommended!
