So friends, have we ever told you story of how we moved to Germany? I will try to make the long story short and straight to the point.
I was 3 when Mom took me to the kindergarten. It was a journey full of ... Ok. Lets skip some years.
Marten and I are both graduated from Tallinn University of Technology in 2017. After that, we both explored the incredible construction market in Estonia. I worked on a construction site, then for a big real estate developer. After a year-long break from construction, I went back and started working as a sales engineer in Hilti. From all the jobs I ever had, this was the most challenging and also the most exciting and fun. It was it! I loved it! I could finally settle and focus.
But one day I was asked a question: “Do you want to come and work as an engineer in Germany?”. Well. A lot to think about...
This day I came home and asked the same question Marten. I never heard him answer any question so quickly. It was “Yes, it's perfect!”. ( Well except of wedding, when he did his best to say right "yes" at the right time)
We both always thought about living abroad for some time. We both loved traveling and adventure. We both loved taking challenges and learning something new. This opportunity was all those things.
After months of consideration, we decided to take this step. We were blessed with an incredible chance to go and explore a new country, have a stable job and opportunity to get a new specialization in construction engineering. It sounded perfect.
There was one but. There always is, right?
German.
Marten didn't know any word in German. I luckily learned it in school. But it was by this time 7 years ago. It was all gone. All.
The first job interview in Berlin was funny. I couldn't understand a word my future boss said. Luckily there is Google Translate. So we just spoke to the phone and it translated. Thank God for technology!
So we came home and decided that in half a year we will move.
We both started learning German. It was not easy. We both had jobs that were very demanding. But one day at a time. 5 words per day. Or per week. We did all we could to learn as much as possible.
One September day, we packed all our stuff in our car (it looks small, but it fitted all our suitcases. BTW its on sale now, if you are interested, wink-wink - PM), took our cat ( he was so excited to travel - see pictures below) and started driving towards our new future. We both laughed, that look, we are now both homeless and out of jobs.
But the next day we signed the contract and moved into our new apartment.
So here was the plan. The company sent us to language courses for a few months to get our German on level B1 and after that, we go straight to Railway School to become railroad engineers.
The language school part was fun! The school was amazing! If someone wants to learn German fast and enjoy it, then I highly recommend our school (GLS German Language School in Berlin).
But then came the difficult part. The engineering school.
Although we had our B1, we could read the news, watch TV and listen to the German radio, we understood only every 5th word our Dozent said on the first day. It was a shock.
Since then, every day, after 7-8 hours of lectures we went to the office for the next 3-4 hours to translate everything and learn the most important things by heart.
By now we survived 4 weeks of our school and now it's not that difficult anymore. We are still alive.
We have 2,5 Moths left. We will keep you updated.
So here is our story – why and how we moved to Germany.
Hip-hip Hooray!
In our family the most passionate traveler is Pluto. You can see this sense of adventure in his eyes.
All our things got packed in 6 suitcases. And we never needed anything else. ( Well, more or less).
At 5 am. Before test. Full of energy and enthusiasm. Sometimes I wonder, why is life always so easy?
